If you're searching for "web development costs in Sri Lanka" you've probably already been quoted wildly different numbers. That's normal. Let us try to make sense of it.
We're a company that operates in both the UK and Sri Lanka, so we see both sides of this — what clients expect to pay, and what it actually costs to build things properly.
The short answer
A basic business website in Sri Lanka typically costs between LKR 150,000 and LKR 500,000 (roughly £400 to £1,300). A proper custom web application can run from LKR 500,000 to several million, depending on complexity.
Those are ballpark figures. The real cost depends on what you're building, which brings us to the longer answer.
What drives the price up (and down)
Complexity. A five-page marketing site is a completely different job from a customer portal with login, dashboards, and payment integration. Don't compare quotes for different scopes — that's like comparing the price of a bicycle to a car.
Design. A custom design costs more than using a pre-built template. Both are valid choices. Templates get you live faster. Custom designs give you something that actually feels like your brand.
Tech stack. WordPress sites are generally cheaper upfront but can cost more to maintain long-term. Modern frameworks like Next.js cost more to build but tend to be faster, more secure, and easier to scale.
Ongoing work. Many people forget this part. A website isn't a one-time purchase — it needs hosting, updates, security patches, and content changes. Factor in at least LKR 10,000-30,000 per month for basic maintenance.
Why Sri Lanka is a strong option
The talent pool here is genuinely good. Sri Lankan developers are well-trained, many have worked with international clients, and the cost of living means competitive rates without cutting quality.
That said, cheap doesn't always mean good value. We've seen projects where the client went with the lowest quote, got a half-finished product, and ended up paying more to fix it than the original budget.
The sweet spot is a team that charges fairly, communicates clearly, and delivers code that someone else can actually maintain.
English and Tamil support matters
If your business serves Tamil-speaking customers — in Sri Lanka, the UK, or globally — having a dev team that speaks the language is genuinely useful. It's not just about translation. It's about understanding how your customers think, what they expect from a website, and how to design for that.
We work in both English and Tamil at PrimeTechix. It's one of the things our Sri Lankan clients appreciate most.
Our honest advice
Get at least three quotes. Make sure everyone is quoting on the same scope. Ask what's included in the price and what isn't. And don't skip the conversation about what happens after launch.
